Ben Rothlisberger and Switzerland

The Super Bowl is tomorrow - if the snow in Dallas permits. Sports TV is full of it and even Switzerland is having its say.
That's right, because Rothlisberger's ancestors are from the Canton of Bern in Swtizerland. Swiss media got hold of that fact a couple years ago when the Steelers won their last Super Bowl, at just about the same time that my Swiss husband asked me why a Swiss was playing American football in Pittsburgh (he still calls them the “Swiss Steelers”).
And, this time around, they're flying the Swiss flag for Ben, "Bernois d'origine," (whose roots are in the Bern Canton) as the Lausanne paper announced yesterday. Being Swiss, they aren't cutting corners - the morals question is there for all to read about.
The Swiss paper did a full-page spread on Rothlisberger and Pittsburgh, complete with photos of Heinz Stadium and a history of the club and the Rooneys. Just to complete the picture, the Swiss learned that Pittsburgh is a sports town, with not only the most Super Bowls won in the NFL, but also that there is a PNC Park for the Pirates baseball team, photo included, and their World Series record. A photo of Consol Energy Center and the Stanley Cup record of the Penguins rounds it out. The Swiss can easily identify with the Penguins because ice hockey is their national sport and many NHL players come to Switzerland to play hockey, either at the beginning or the end of their careers.
There was even a photo of the black-and-gold Terrible Towel, created as I think I remember, by Bob Prince in 1960 to cheer the Pirates on before they won the World Series with Mazeroski's immortal home run. The Swiss noted that the black-and-gold follows all three teams because it's Pittsburgh's color.
The article also covered Pittsburgh's change from “the” steel town to a modern city.
In a small corner box on the page were a few words about Green Bay.

It's clear. Switzerland is for the Steelers.
