The American Majority Can No Longer Depend on Constitutional Protection
China, India, USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia, Japan. ~~~~~ What's the common thread in this list of countries? -- Wealth? Armies? Air quality? Energy use? None of these. They are the world's ten largest countries ranked by population. The giants are China and India with 35% of the world's people. The USA in third place has only 4.4%, twice as many people as fourth place Indonesia. Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest countries. Nigeria, Russia and Bangladesh are among the most corrupt. Japan has one of the world's most homogeneous populations. China is totalitarian. Three are Moslem (Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh ), one is divided between Moslems and Christians (Nigeria), and three are Christian (USA, Brazil, Russia). Four are working democracies (India, USA, Brazil, Japan). The common thread - all except Japan have serious levels of social/political unrest. ~~~~~ This leads us to reflect on political stability as a function of culture and homogeneity. Homogeneity, as in Japan and Moslem countries, is often seen as reducing competition and economic change. ~~~~~ What do experts name as the elements that most often destabilize countries? Aristotle believed political instability results when the distribution of wealth fails to correspond with the distribution of political power, and concluded that the most stable political system is one based on a large middle class. Others regard the governing elites and their composition as critical, seeing the alienation of the elites from the mass as the major cause of revolutions and other violent political change. Other analysts focus on economic crises -- with pressures from product scarcity and deprivation, threats to individual social position, feelings of insecurity and uncertainty about the future, and aggravation of the relationships among social classes -- all create political instability because the competence of the existing leadership and regime are blamed. Many experts say political systems can undergo violent breakdown when channels of communication fail to function, when institutional structures and processes fail to resolve conflicts among the persistent demands of different citizen groups by implementing acceptable policies, and when the system ceases to be viewed as responsive by individuals and groups making demands on it, leading to revolution and other forms of violent collapse at the end of a process that usually climaxes when the system is most vulnerable - for example, during war or severe economic distress. But, political scientists often suggest that the presence in the population of widely shared attitudes toward the government and the existence of basic agreement on the legitimacy of state authority prevent collapse, even in severe crises. ~~~~~ Dear readers, that should remind Americans that their Constitution has been regarded for 220 years as history's finest example of a governmental system that remains true to its fundamental political and social principles while being flexible enough to accommodate social and political change. But, in the US, the culturally homogeneous majority is being forced to abandon, or repress, its social compact -- a compact made by its Christian democratic Founders -- because various minorities are banding together to destabilize and replace America's cultural majority. These minorities do not represent a "new majority" -- African-Americans, Moslems, atheists, LGBTs, abortionists, anti-free speechers, pro-welfare state partisans and Christian-baiters are not a homogeneous entity. Their agendas differ widely. They are not culturally related to those who drafted the US Constitution, or nourished it for 150 years. But, they are using the Constitution to turn America into a society whose majority can no longer rely on constitutional protection. It's time for the American cultural, economic majority to address these issues and perhaps call a Constitutional Convention to clarify their view of the constitutional boundaries that minorities must respect. The alternative could be social upheaval.

A Constitutional Convention what a wonderful idea, The problem may be that in the make up of the convention the forces of evil and the malcontents would in the name of fairness be given majority rule if they banded together. 1% here, 5% there and pretty soon your looking at a controlling interest who would bring their needs, their wants, their non-American ideas, their social programs - they would represent everything that a Constitutional Convention would be all all about - the re-establishment of the principals given to us by the Founding Fathers.
ReplyDeletePrincipals that we have in some disillusion attempt tried to pass on to people of many social classes that have no idea or any desire to live by.
Major changes would have to come from this Constitutional Convention to get us back on track. But what a grand idea.
The USA stands alone in this world of countries. We are unique; we are the envy of all the other countries. America is exceptionally different.
ReplyDeleteAmerican exceptionalism is one of three related ideas. First is that that the history of the United States is inherently different from other nations. Secondly, in this view, American exceptionalism stems from its emergence from the American Revolution, thereby becoming what political scientist Seymour Martin Lipset called "the first new nation.” And thirdly, developing a uniquely American ideology, "Americanism", based on liberty, egalitarianism, individualism, republicanism, democracy and laissez-faire for business. This ideology itself is often referred to as "American exceptionalism." There is a feeling in America this idea that America has a unique mission to transform the world. As Abraham Lincoln put it in the Gettysburg address (1863), Americans have a duty to see that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth”, a sense that its history and its mission give the United States a superiority over other nations.
The problems that beseech the rest of the planet were once faced and defeat in America until in the early 20th century a list of Progressive Socialists began to get elected in State Houses, Congress, and the Presidency and a movement was at hand to make American not the land of opportunity, but rather the land of entitlements.
Immigration took on a new face – one of people wanting not to assimilate into the American way, but one that wanted are entitlements and the retention of their homelands customs. A few generations later we have a large percentage of the American population that know nothing of how and why America became “EXCEPTIONAL” in the community of nations. Read the great French writer, Alexis de Tocqueville, the first writer to describe the country as "exceptional" in 1831 and 1840
We were the “Shinning City on the Hill” and can be again when America comes first and the great documents of the ‘Founders’ become our beacon of light once more.
Our Constitution is often treated as a repository, worthy of reverence but no longer of much practical use. Yet the Constitution reflects, in many deep and subtle ways, the character of the people who established it and have lived and prospered under it for centuries. This is particularly true of its structural features of federalism and separated powers, which vindicate Americans’ democratic nature, our distrust of power, and our taste for open competition.
ReplyDeleteA well-led government can present, at least for a time, a unified, dignified, self-confident public face. Our American system depends on a reasonable balance of power among the three constitutional branches, and we are losing that. In recent decades power has shifted dramatically away from Congress—primarily to the executive but also to the judiciary. Congress itself, despite its complaints about executive and judicial poaching, has been giving up its constitutional powers voluntarily and proactively for decades.
Can constitutional government, can liberty, survive in the United States? This equation between Congress and liberty may at first seem inconsistent. Survival of Congress and liberty is historical and specific. Within the United States today Congress is the prime intermediary institution, the chief political structure of the people as distinguished from the masses, the one body to which the citizenry can now appeal for redress not merely from individual despotic acts, but from large-scale autocratic innovations, trends, and principles.
Elect a better Congress via better congressional selection and Congressional protection of the people, by the people’s voice, and for the country will never perish from the earth.
The Unuted States use to be a Christian society. But tiday we are a society that is governed by Miniorty needs.
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of Christians in America, but they feel isolated from the government. Reversing this is the problem. How do we stop a 40 plus years of coddling 2nd and 3rd generations of welfare babies that are having more welfare babies? It's a like style. Stay home , have plenty if children, and live off tax payers tax monies. And Immigratns come here with no skills, no ties to our communities, non support from friends and family because they are supporting families back home.
The real answer is no income, no job, no education, etc ... It's back home your going. And that's not cruel, it's really being merciful.
