Americans Mistrust the Government - and That's Good
According to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll, Americans don't have confidence in the government's ability to protect their personal safety and economic security, a sign that their widespread unease about the state of the nation extends far beyond politics. The Associated Press-GfK poll reveals that more than half those in the survey said Washington can do little to effectively lessen threats such as climate change, mass shootings, racial tensions, economic uncertainty and an unstable job market. The poll was conducted before a Liberian man in Texas was diagnosed with the Ebola virus, but after mass demonstrations in Missouri following the fatal police shooting a black 18-year-old and after the beheading of a woman in an Oklahoma food processing plant, apparently at the hand of a suspended worker. The concerns of Americans start with the economy. The poll found that 90% of those most likely to vote in the November 4 election call the economy an extremely or very important issue. Even among Democrats, just 27% are confident the government can keep them safe from terrorist attacks. Fewer than 20% say so on each of the other issues, including climate change. Americans living in urban areas tend to be more confident the government will keep them safe from terrorist threats than do people living in suburbs and rural areas. Younger Americans are more confident than older people that the government can minimize the threat of mass shootings. When it comes to quelling racial tensions, Hispanics are more confident than are blacks and whites. Only 20% in the poll say they are extremely or very confident the government can keep them safe from another terrorist attack, while 40% express moderate confidence.One-third of Americans say they are not too confident or not confident at all in the government's ability to prevent another large-scale terrorist attack. ~~~ We should not make light of the deep mistrust Americans have in their federal government. It symbolizes the malaise that has gripped America since the economic bubble burst in 2008, leading to the "Great Recession" with its loss of savings and homes, unemployment and under-employment, and the refusal of the Obama White House, despite its upbeat rhetoric, to do much to pull America's economy back into decent working order. But, Americans' profound mistrust reaches beyond their reading of the state of the economy into the realm of America's national and personal safety. Half - 50% - of Americans have no or little confidence in the government's ability to prevent another large-scale terrorist attack in America. To feel unsafe in America is a very recent phenomenon and it strains the bond between Americans and their government close to the breaking point. And it is not helped by the lack of confidence Americans have in their President - whose positive poll is at 38-40%, depending on the poll - with Mr. Obama's inability to manage foreign policy leading the negative numbers -- a perception closely related to the feeling of personal safety, since foreign policy today focuses on the Middle East and ISIS' threat to kill Americans in America. The insecurity relates to the negative perceptions about Obama's 2011 Iraq troop withdrawal, his mishandling of the Syria civil war and the Iranian negotiations, his refusal to properly engage the US in defeating ISIS, and his hesitance to explain his foreign policy to America or the world in reasonably acceptable terms. ~~~~~ But, dear readers, mistrust of government is not just a recent Ametican phenomenon. It has existed since the Greeks first created the concept of democratic government. Here are some examples of the value of distrust set out through the history of western civilization. ~~ ANCIENT GREECE. "There is one safeguard known generally to the wise, which is an advantage and security to all, but especially to democracies as against despots. What is it? Distrust." ___Demosthenes / "There are all kinds of devices invented for the protection and preservation of countries: defensive barriers, forts, trenches, and the like... But prudent minds have as a natural gift one safeguard which is the common possession of all, and this applies especially to the dealings of democracies. What is this safeguard? Skepticism. This you must preserve. This you must retain. If you can keep this, you need fear no harm." ___Demosthenes / "The three aims of the tyrant are, one, the humiliation of his subjects; he knows that a mean-spirited man will not conspire against anybody; two, the creation of mistrust among them; for a tyrant is not to be overthrown until men begin to have confidence in one another -- and this is the reason why tyrants are at war with the good; they are under the idea that their power is endangered by them, not only because they will not be ruled despotically, but also because they are too loyal to one another and to other men, and do not inform against one another or against other men -- three, the tyrant desires that all his subjects shall be incapable of action, for no one attempts what is impossible and they will not attempt to overthrow a tyranny if they are powerless." ___Aristotle. ~~ THE RENAISSANCE. "When you disarm the people, you commence to offend them and show that you distrust them either through cowardice or lack of confidence, and both of these opinions generate hatred." ___Niccolo Machiavelli. ~~ THE AMERICAN FOUNDERS. "He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man...The sum of all is, if we would most truly enjoy this gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people." ___Samuel Adams / "There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty" ___ John Adams / "All men having power ought to be distrusted to a certain degree." ___James Madison / "Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny." ___ Thomas Jefferson. ~~ So, the next time you hear laments about Americans' mistrust of their government, breathe a sigh of relief. As long as Americans distrust their government, they are in the driver's seat -- because they see the flaws in decisionmaking and in the personal political ambitions that tend to corrupt the American constitutional system. And what Americans see, they can correct. That is how America has always worked. And it will work this time. Vote on November 4th.

When the leaders choose to make themselves bidders at an auction of popularity, their talents, in the construction of the state, will be of no service. They will become flatterers instead of legislators; the instruments, not the guides, of the people.
ReplyDeleteEdmund Burke
In the United States there is more patriotism in the people than in those who govern it. Has anyone asked themselves why? In lieu of everyone feeling the pride of being an American, wouldn’t it be more natural for the “legislators” to be patriotic – more sincerely patriotic.
DeleteWhat America needs is to take back the control of its government at all levels. And maybe the only way to do that is to put “TERM LIMITS” into place. We have Professional Elected Politicians that have actually downgraded our quality of representation.
Does the Dog wag the tails or is the tail wagging the dog?
In his second Treatise of Government #199 John Locke said that any government, no matter if it is a democracy or an absolute monarchy could become a tyrannical, oppressive government IF the ruler didn’t observe the fundamental laws of the commonwealth and therefor no longer would consider the ends of the government to be the preserver of the public good. Any ruler elected or otherwise Locke said that put himself ahead of the citizens was in violation of the trust of his people. He goes on to say that trust is essential because any ruler should only exercise the power given to him by the people when the government was formed. Locke says that people have the right to resist any and all tyrannical rule.
ReplyDeleteAs it was then in 1690 when Locke published the Second Treatise, today the Second Treatise of Government may be the most definitive document on man and his Government … where the two meet and where they should never meet … the duties of government and the responsibilities of man to control it.
Thomas Jefferson in a letter to James Madison said …” The executive power in our Government is not the only, perhaps not even the principal, object of my solicitude. The tyranny of the Legislature is really the danger most to be feared, and will continue to be so for many years to come. The tyranny of the executive power will come in its turn, but at a more distant period."
ReplyDeleteSo to follow what Jefferson said we should be most concerned about the act of Congress. And worry later about the President. But aren’t we at that stage of worrying about Obama – the Congress throughout the years has passed all the bad legislation that has lead us to Obama’s disrespect for the Rule of Law.
Alexis de Tocqueville said in his master piece “Democracy in America” that he was pleased to quote Jefferson on the matter of functioning government because he believed Jefferson to be the most powerful advocate (of democratic government) democracy had ever sent forth
America has overcome a lot of road blocks on its short history on the world stage. And I really don’t doubt that somehow, someway, by somebodies effort we will be victories over the bad place we find ourselves today.
ReplyDeleteThe visible problem is that our current president attacks the Constitution and the Rule of Law like it’s a tackling dummy for some football team. But a more detailed look at the problem, the truth is that it is not just this president, but a line of men who have been president that had no business being a Township Dog Catcher. A line of very bad occupants of the White House with only a few outstanding, dedicated patriots thrown in between the waste product – with a long line waiting to possibly denigrate the significance of the office and the standing of the country on their watch.
Obama and all those that were and will be as incompetent will continue to try and empower a government philosophy that is in direct conflict with the Founding Fathers ideas set forth in The Constitution. And a little at a time they have gnawed away at the perfect political organizational document since the days of Woodrow Wilson in 1913 – 101 years of frontal attack.
"When the people fear the government there is tyranny. When the government rears the people there is liberty" - Thomas Jefferson
ReplyDeleteThe problem today is that most governments have NO fear of the people at all. Maybe not Tyranny, but questionable Freedom
Ones actions have all kinds of consequences, and if you see how things work you can often foresee the consequences
ReplyDeleteA month before the Mid-term election and …confession must be good for the soul time in Washington DC.
ReplyDeleteLeon Panetta always seemed like an honest person for a politician, until today. Headlines from a Fox news Web site:
Former CIA director Leon Panetta said Tuesday that he knew from the “very beginning” that Benghazi was a “terrorist attack on our compound.” Is this the smoking gun that will do in Obama & Clinton?
I’m sure that is a relief to the families of the 4 brutally killed and dragged through the streets of Benghazi the night of 9/11/2012. So if Panetta knew it – and he was in the “situation room in the White House- along with Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a sundry of other top insider White House Staff … did everyone know it then? Considering the self-acclaimed smartest man (Obama) and woman (Clinton) in the world they must have known it also.
But yet they went out, addressed the press, appeared on talk shows, news programs and ALL told a LIE.
Oh, yes Panetta today also announced that his advice (a 2 year military career) to Obama is … “Panetta says Obama must 'develop the will to get into the ring' against ISIS”
IS THERE ANY QUESTION UNANSWERED AS TO WHY …”AMERICANS MISTRUST THE GOVERNMENT?”
Panetta, Gates and Clinton are all telling us what has been clear for a few years now that there are very serious problems inside the Obama White House. As outsiders we all saw that. But when two distinguished public servants as Panetta and Gates have been drift away from the accepted norm and tell tails before the administration of any president is over – it says something more. It says that there are REALLY BIG problems in this administration.
ReplyDeleteSecretary of State Clintons book was an attempt to distance herself from the Obama Administration … not to set the record straight.
Look for more forth coming “cleansing of their soul” announcements from a variety of other departed administration/inner circle in the know staffers.
This administration has been one big lie, which has been attempted to be covered up by lots of little lies that are about as transparent as Obama promised his administration would be.
Nice try President Obama but you set the tone from day one. Your actions said and endorsed fabricating any story to make you look good.
Distrust this administration? … why not, they have given us every reason to.
