Obama's Speech vs American Principles as We Commemorate 9/11

President Barack Obama's vaunted ISIS speech last night was fifteen minutes of platitudes. The goal - certainly not to eliminate ISIS because without IS military leadership on the ground, no one else will be there committed to dig in on the ground and take the heat that Obama has refused to accept as coalition leader. To summarize -- There was nothing new but there were huge gaping holes in Obama's explanatipn of his policy. There was no recognition that ISIS was created by the 2011 US troop withdrawal engineered by Obama and no reconsideration about a total withdrawal from Afghanistan, which Obama described as ready to take on the burden of leading Afghans even though the new government is at best a joke, with the two candidates refusing to agree on who won and with one of them threatening to form a parallel government. There was no definition of who the coalition is because there is no coalition as yet, with the Arabs saying they will "do their part" and European governments hesitating about putting their own military boots on the ground, or planes in the air over Syria in the case of Germany. There was no explanation about what the 1600 US Special Forces now on the ground in Iraq will be doing or how they will be backed up by ground troops, as they must be if they are to remain over extended periods. There was no reality shown about al-Assad's importance in Syria, or his obvious refusal to allow US military jets over his territory without his permission. And it should be noted that Russia, Syria's protector, has already said that unilateral US airstrikes in Syria would be an act of aggression that violates international law. His decision to train and arm "moderate" Syria rebels comes too late, in my opinion, because they have been largely sidelined or radicalized by ISIS. Obama's change of heart is irrelevant now. And so is his reliance on an Iraq government that isn't yet fully formed and that has no commitment from the Iraq sunni community to integrate. And he spoke of the Iraqi army as if is battle-ready when in fact it is still in a shambles, as Obama recognized when he said US military advisors would help them get reorganized. And Obama had not one word of thanks for the Kurds and their Peshmerga army, which has singlehandedly confronted ISIS in northern Iraq, with US airstrikes and Iranian arms, unfortunately, in the face of Obama's desire to work through Baghdad. Obama also gave no indication that he will arm the Peshmerga as they require if they are to fill the void left by the abandonment of the field by the Iraqi regular army. The speech was a sad performance, once again showing Obama's incompetence. We all know US Special Forces members will be killed, wounded and possibly captured, just as American troops were killed and maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan only to be kicked aside, all because Obama's view of the Middle East has not changed. The bottom line? -- he might as well have admitted that his first six years were wrongheaded because his speech...weak as it was...negated all he has said and done till now. ~~~~~ But, dear readers, because it is 9/11, I would like to end on a more positive note, looking back to September 11, 1960, and The Sharon Statement. In the fall of 1960, 90 young conservatives met at the Sharon, Connecticut, home of National Review editor William F. Buckley, Jr., where they founded Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) to serve as an organization for young conservative activists. As their statement of principle, the group adopted The Sharon Statement, which was drafted by 26-year-old newspaper editor M. Stanton Evans. Written “at this time of moral and political crisis,” the statement is a succinct summary of the central ideas of modern American conservatism. Among those principles are : Free will and moral authority come from God; political and economic liberty are essential for a free people and free institutions; government must be strictly and constitutionally limited; the market economy is the economic system most compatible with freedom; and Communism (today, we may substitute jihadist terrorism) must be defeated, not merely contained. This statement of principles denies the basic premises of Progressivism and liberalism. It also recalls earlier New England declarations about fundamenta liberties -- for example, the Essex Resolves and Massachusetts Constitution of 1780. While the language differs, the concerns for liberty remain the same over the centuries. YAF became one of the most influential groups in the history of modern conservatism. ~~~~~ “The Sharon Statement” Adopted in conference at Sharon, Connecticut, September 11, 1960. "In this time of moral and political crises, it is the responsibility of the youth of America to affirm certain eternal truths. We, as young conservatives, believe : That foremost among the transcendent values is the individual’s use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force; That liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom; That the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice; That when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty; That the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power; That the genius of the Constitution - the division of powers - is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people, in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federa government; That the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs; That when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation; That when it takes from one man to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both; That we will be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the United States is secure; That history shows periods of freedom are rare, and can exist only when free citizens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies; That the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatest single threat to these liberties; That the United States should stress victory over, rather than coexistence with, this menace; and, That American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does it serve the just interests of the United States?" ~~~~~ Reflect on The Sharon Statenent as we commemorate 9/11 and resolve to protect democratic institutions and America as their defender.

  1. I have NEVER read or heard remarked the comparison of the Sharon Statement dated September 11, 1960 and that of the invasion of America by the al-Qaeda terrorist on September 11, 2001. NEVER.

All gone now but 3 of my best friends and constant consultants were influential in the formation of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF).

Thank you for a prodigious posting today Casey Pops

  2. Obama sounded like a candidate last night – not the leader of the free world that the president of the United States once was. His speech was empty except for the large voids he forgot to lie about. But his most disappointing passage to me was:

“As Commander-in-Chief, my highest priority is the security of the American people. Over the last several years, we have consistently taken the fight to terrorists who threaten our country. We took out Osama bin Laden and much of al Qaeda’s leadership in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We’ve targeted al Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen, and recently eliminated the top commander of its affiliate in Somalia. We’ve done so while bringing more than 140,000 American troops home from Iraq, and drawing down our forces in Afghanistan, where our combat mission will end later this year. Thanks to our military and counterterrorism professionals, America is safer.”

Now really is this what Obama takes credit for as Commander-in-Chief. Our early and ill-advised departure from Iraq created ISIS/ISIL and our total withdraw from Afghanistan will undoubtedly be a great hardship on the Afghanis.

Obama thinks with his tongue and believes what it says

  3. There are approximately 1,700 “jihad” terrorists driving pickup trucks trying to take over half a country — where there are 30,000 opposing troops stationed there — and they (jihad) do it in a couple of weeks. Weird things do happen in Iraq, but really now is that really possible? Remember Operation Desert Storm, it was hyped as “The Mother of All Battles?” But that took the entire mechanized U.S. military — Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines six weeks.

    1. from a mere 2,000 fighters just a week ago, now the Obama admistraion is using the number number of ISIS fighters has swelled to as many as 31,500, (CIA says) in Northern Iraq & Northern Syria.

the bigger the number of combatants the more money and time Obama can spend and carry on his war.

  4. What Obama and his Inner Circle of advisors and confidants don’t know they don’t know, and what they do know about the Middle East is useless in waging war or negotiating with the Arab world.

What makes ISIL so powerful today is the fact that they had a plan (Obama doesn’t at all) they laid out their military strategy based on where oil fields are located. The fact that they went after northeast Syria and northern Iraq is not coincidental by any means. Islamic State may be ruthless and brutal in the field, but it is first and foremost a terrorist organization with an astute business plan in the Board Room (or tent).

The widely rumored belief that Saudi Arabia created ISIL and is funding it is wrong. Saudi Arabia is not the source of ISIS — it’s the ISIL’s primary target – for their Oil Fields and the oil revenue. The one Middle East/Muslin power that can effectively move against ISIL in a manner that would appear legitimate to other Muslims is only Saudi Arabia. Accept the premise that the US can militarily defeat ISIL – the minute we pull our troops out ISIL will emerge from the holes and be right back in control. Reflect on Iraq after Hussein’s death. The whole Arab empire is a déjà vu situation.

Money and Oil & Oil and Money - for ISIL they are one and the same. The coalition needs to protect any and all oil fields and re-capture those in Iraq & Syria from ISIL. The head of this snake is money via oil revenue.

And let’s get away from believing that …”The enemy of my enemy is my friend” malarkey. We may have to treat the enemy of our enemy as our friend, but they are not our friends. We need each other to turn & defeat ISIL permanently/forever. And just maybe out of that can come a friendship based on mutual needs.

Obama in his address last night was wrong and he knows it and does not care folks!

  5. Ten Arab States including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to rally behind Washington in the fight against Islamist militants (ISIL). They agreed to do their share in the comprehensive fight against ISIL.

Turkey is not agreeing to join in a fight against the militant ISIL important because Obama has been saying that Turkey and President Recep Erdoğan is a friend – never was and never will be. OK just so we understand that and Obama doesn’t seem to.

The fight will include “stopping the flow of foreign fighters through neighboring countries, countering financing of ISIL and other violent extremists, repudiating their hateful ideology, and bringing perpetrators to justice”. The 10 Arab countries will also contribute to humanitarian relief efforts, assisting with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of communities assaulted by ISIL, and supporting states that face the most acute ISIL peril.

Kerry said that Arab partners will play a “leading role” in the coalition – but the Arab partners didn’t say that at all friends. They did say they put up monies, suffer some short term PR adversities among other Arab nations. But FIGHT, that is NO where in the communique from them and John Kerry.

What the Arab nations will do is pay the US for protection of their oil fields. Look at the list of countruies … oil producers one and all.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal called for a “comprehensive approach” that does not focus on one country in the fight against ISIL – plain, outspoken truth and not from Secretary of State Kerry or President Obama.

  6. Obama’s failure to connect the dots, to see and prepare for potentially devastating attacks on U.S. and global citizens and energy supplies, is an inexcusable threat to our nation’s security. Preparations for massive energy terrorist attacks around the world are increasingly open and obvious.

With Iraqi and other oil fields in jihadist hands, petroleum has become the mother’s milk of Islamic terrorism. Along with drug trafficking and bank robbery, it provides financing to arm, feed, train and pay terrorists on a scale that makes some countries GDP look like chump change.

  7. The American Dream under Obama has become the American Nightmare. As an “Inner City Organizer” in Chicago he (and his staff) was the life blood for his people to avail themselves for unearned, unmerited, government handouts. Today he carries that same mantra of “need” to the US. He doesn’t know that the physic of the American citizen is that we don’t need or want someone from the government in our daily lives.

Obama brings this need to micro manage us because he see American as a larger macrocosm of the Inner City Chicago he was a “goffer” for. Every step, every move, every program, everything he does is directed at what he sees as the people that can’t manage their lives without Big Government there to help every step of the way. Mr. President you are not the solution, you and you Big Government is the problem…”Protect the Borders, deliver the mail, and stay out of our lives”

  8. To quote a few words from a song by the Eagles:

    “So oftentimes it happens
that we live our life in chains,
and we never even know we have the key” (THE VOTE – I added this part)

We do have the key, and it’s turned by accepting that we are better than any Washington politician thought we were... and acting upon that belief. We don’t like what Obama is doing start the change this November.

If we the people decided to vote all incumbents out and send a whole new Congress to Washington in January – what would happen? Nothing Earth shattering at all. Life would go on, and as Reagan alluded to probably for the better. We need to change what is happening to the American Idea.

  9. President Obama is now discussing matters with members of the Council on Foreign Relations, always referred to as “bipartisan foreign policy experts.”

Obama discussed his plans at a dinner with a bipartisan group of foreign policy experts this week at the White House and made clear his belief that he has the authority to attack the militant Islamist group on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border to protect U.S national security, multiple people who participated in the discussion said. The move to attack in Syria would represent a remarkable escalation in strategy for Obama, who has sought during his presidency to reduce the U.S. military engagement in the Middle East.

Why now? Because the White House is losing influence - FAST. This is a serious threat to a lame-duck President.
