Economy, National Security, ISIS - Americans Are Unhappy with Everything Obama Does
Americans have a bleak view of the economy and of their own financial situations, according to a new study from the Public Religion Research Institute. The Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, but only 21% of Americans believe it's really over, while 72% say the Great Recession continues. While 7% of Americans report they are in excellent shape financially, only 34% say they're in good shape, 37% say they're in fair shape, and 20% say they're in poor shape. Just 30% feel the economy has improved during the past two years, while 35% say it has worsened, and 33% say it is about the same. And difficult as it may be to accept, 36% of Americans say that someone in their household had to cut back on food to save money during the last year. “It looks a little gloomy,” said Robert Jones, CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, which conducted the survey in conjunction with the Brookings Institution. “There's been a wavering belief in the concept of the American Dream. About half said it once existed but no longer. One in 10 said it never was true,” Jones told the Houston Chronicle. “Despite the fact that there has been improvement in the economy since the Great Recession, there are still four in ten Americans who live in households experiencing high or moderate levels of economic insecurity,” Jones said. “Economic insecurity remains highly stratified by race, with nearly six in ten black Americans living in households with high or moderate levels of economic insecurity.” PBS Newshour reported that the most common economic fear "reveals a human suffering more visceral, and perhaps less publicized, than layoffs or unemployment rolls : food insecurity," with 36% of respondents saying they’d experienced it. "It’s possible that’s the budgetary item Americans feel they have the most control over (compared to whether they pay a monthly bill or not, for example), and thus find it easiest to cut. It’s not specified whether “cutting back to save money” means going hungry or forgoing an $8 bag of almonds," PBS Newshour reported. But, almonds aside,Wall Street Journal columnist William Galston says life has been tough for many Americans for quite a while : "The American economy hasn't worked for average families since the end of the Clinton administration. A recovery that leaves them out is no recovery at all, and they know it. This simple fact goes a long way toward explaining the tone of our current politics and the temper of our society." Median household income totaled $51,939 in 2013, down 8% from more than $56,000 in 2007. "The median earnings for Americans working full-time year round haven't changed much since 2007," Galston says. "But more than five years into the recovery, there are fewer full-time workers than before the recession." ~~~~~ And, to add to the economy, which is the main concern of Americans, at close to 40%, Karl Rove reports that voters are now worried about national security. As the midterm election campaign enters its last six weeks, new factors have appeared that will help determine which party controls the Senate next year, according to Rove. The concern about national security began with the conflict in Ukraine, and it has grown as ISIS cut a swath across Iraq and beheaded two American journalists. Rove cites an August 4 CBS News poll that asked what was the most important problem facing the country. Terrorism wasn't even on the list. In a September 15 CBS News/New York Times survey, voters ranked terrorism as No. 2 at 17% (behind the economy at 38%) as the most important factor in their decision about who to vote for in the congressional election. A foreign-policy crisis normally boosts the party in power, says Rove, but not this time. Obama's abysmal approval numbers are likely to improve only a little before the election. The GOP's advantage as the party better able to handle national security has been building for more than a year and was at 23% in the September 7 Gallup poll. And voters don't believe the President's claims that the economy is thriving. Even people with jobs feel apprehensive because : paychecks are flat, growth is anemic, and people are worried about their children's prospects. President Obama had a 38% approval on handling the economy in the September 9 Fox News poll. In the September 7 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 67% believe America is on the wrong track. But to win, Rove says, Republican candidates must show they are in touch with voter concerns about growth, jobs, paychecks, government spending and debt -- by offering specific, persuasive ideas. For example, Obama's threat to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants by fiat has turned immigration into an issue involving the President's abuse of power, not just an issue of national security and the economy. For Karl Rove : "It is not enough for Republicans to remind them of Mr. Obama's many failings; voters want to know how the GOP would move the country forward. Republicans must keep three plates spinning at once: encouraging voters to send Mr. Obama a message, defending themselves against brutal Democratic attacks, and laying out a governing vision." ~~~~~ The economic and national security issues are eating into President Obama's own poll numbers. For the first time since Obama took office, more Americans disapprove than approve of his handling of terror threats, as shown in the New York Times latest poll reported on September 25. The slide in the President's approval ratings on terrorism comes as the White House pushes its fight against ISIS, the brutal group that uses beheading as a publicity and recruiting tactic, and as a means of terrorizing entrapped communities into meek submission. The New York Times-CBS poll found that 50% of Anericans hold a negative view of how Obama is generally dealing with terrorism, while only 41% approve. The poll also found that 55% do not believe Obama has a clear plan for dealing with ISIS militants and 57% say he is not being tough enough on the group. Forty-eight percent disapprove of how Obama is handling the ISIS situation compared to 39% who approve. A whopping 69% are in favor of anti-ISIS US airstrikes in Syria, but 55% oppose sending ground troops to that country or to neighboring Iraq to target ISIS. The survey results were released as Obama ratcheted up the pressure on Wednesday, with the President declaring there was no hiding place for the jihadists. "Our reach is long," he warned. According to the Times, the finding that 50% disapprove of how Obama is handling terrorism represents a 12-point increase from March. "The findings represent the first time since he became President that more Americans rate Mr. Obama negatively on terrorism than they do positively," the Times reported. Overall, 58% of Americans now hold a negative view of Obama's overall handling of foreign policy, compared to 34% who view it positively. According to the poll, 33% think the Obama administration's policies have made the country less safe. ~~~~~ Dear readers, it is clear that Americans are not happy with President Obama's performance -- whether we measure the economy or jobs or personal financial security or national security or the war on ISIS, Obama is given low marks in every poll. This should make a Republican sweep of the House and Senate elections inevitable. The trap for the GOP is not to become complacent. Every voter counts. Every local organization and contact count. Every opportunity to speak out about the mess created by Obama and the Democratic Party must be seized. And above all, every public commentary and speech must include details about the GOP's own agenda -- job creation, lower taxes so that business can invest in jobs and technology, bringing the national debt under control, repealing and replacing Obamacare, securing US borders, and returning to constitutional government. The GOP can lead the way out of the Obama morass, but it must be vigilant and pro-active to succeed.

In every venue of government Obama has managed somehow to snatch failure from possible success. He and he alone – none of his predecessor or any Republican- is answerable for the dismal record of not accomplishing anything that the American public expected from his presidency. He is solely responsible for every scandal that has plagued his tenure, every foreign policy failure, every bad stimulus program.
ReplyDeleteEvery, everything has the finger prints of Barrack Obama all over them. And his miserable poll numbers are the testimonials of a very dissatisfied American public. A constituency that is feed-up with being lied to at every turn in the road. A disappoint public with his inability to take blame for which he is responsible for. Promised a more “transparent government” in Washington DC, when in fact this is as devious and underhanded as any in memory.
Why shouldn’t Obama be rewarded with some of the lowest poll numbers since poll were started. Why shouldn’t he be distrusted and disbelieved, he’s earned it in spades.
Barrack Obama and his “leadership” has given us a legal standard of cosmopolitan respectability in the U.S. that now allows getting five kings and dictators to say their on your side as you start bombing a new country. And if you want to get really serious about laws, the Kellogg-Briand Pact has never been repealed, the U.S. and U.K. are parties to it, and it bans all war without exception. But we have moved on from that bad pact.
DeleteOnly in America - only the White House gets to invent legal rationale for their blatant crimes, with the law makers and enforcers prepared to accept the rationale before they hear it. U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power wrote to the U.N. arguing that it is legal for the United States to attack Syria because it is legal for Iraq to defend itself. By this logic, if Canada experienced a violent rebellion, it would be legal for China to attack the United States.
I am not arguing about the war… I’m just pointing the unquestioned control (in one topic) that the people via poor choices in elected officials have given these renegades, these one party politicians, these enemies of the US Constitution. It’s fun to pretend that the rule of law doesn’t matter to you because you have all the weapons. It’s fun to take two-month vacations from Washington. Just don’t count on everyone voting you back this year.
Is Obama the absolute unqualified person to be president that 70 some percent of the American people believe him to be at some level or have we all been fooled? Did he really set out to destroy the United States? Is he anti-American? Is his aim the total destruction of the Constitutional? Does he have a plan to not leave office come January 20, 2017? Is he that sinister? Is he nearly competent enough to pull off such a move?
ReplyDeleteDick Morris and his wife Eileen McGann have a great new book that maybe says yes to all of the above, but also maybe there is some other aim more menacing in play with Obama. Let’s remember Dick Morris was the right hand man of Bill Clinton. Dick would yell and Bill jumped. Democrats flock to have his counsel on political action.
In their new book Dick and Eileen make the point (Oh so well) that what Obama is after is not a lifetime position as president – if only it were that simple if Morris is right. They present the argument quiet convincingly that Obama wants to:
• Consolidate power so the country can NEVER again elect someone other than a liberal leaning Progressive Socialists Democrat
• Obama wants to turn the United Sates into a one party nation
• Morris in detail describes a lot of Obama’s blunders (as far as America is concerned) as not blunders at all, but rather well thought out plans to increase his Democratic Party voters’ edge.
Morris also says that Hillary Clinton is an equal “socialist” as Obama and would do everything she can to perpetrate the same “one-party America”
Their book is titled – “Power Grab: Obama’s Dangerous Plan for a One-Party Nation”. It’s a must read for anyone interested in the long term health of America. I plan on re-reading it over the weekend.
Sorry for the book review instead of a comment on Casey Pops excellent Blog … but they do match up.
In 1992 the economy was lagging, at least a little bit. Bill Clinton said to the American public, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Well turnabout is fair play… “It’s the economy, stupid” – Mr. President in 2014 just as it was in 2010. He has destroyed the pivotal point of life for Americans. Sure his Labor department keeps reporting that the economy is improving and they present numbers that show they are right. But it’s their numbers altered and bent to support their claim.
ReplyDelete“Figures don’t lie … but liars often figure” should be the moto of the Treasury Department because their weekly/monthly labor report is bought and paid for but the Administration.
If I were a candidate for the House or senate this election (or for that matter any election) I would be running on one main point … Revamping the Tax Code that Mr. & Mrs. Everyday citizen is asked to follow in paying their taxes. Such a platform affects everyone that files a return equally… and it is equally a nightmare.
DeleteOur federal tax code is 80,000 pages, it contains 3,951,104 words. That is 7 times greater than “War & Peace.”
The IRS expects us citizens to retain tax returns and corresponding receipts & various other associated documentation for 7 years. But the IRS can’t seem to find compelling e-mails from 6 months ago.
My point is that every problem is not on the front page. Change must start at the bottom and work up. Too get to the discussion of invading other countries, of installing a workable immigration program, to put into place a Homeland security that has a chance to work is the cream of being an elected public official. Taxes are grunt work with little to no applause at the end of the day.,
Obama never intended to do the marginal grunt work. He needed the headline work! Work that he has so messed up the next president will most likely get nothing done except “house cleaning.”
Obama’s policies have led to more part-time jobs, more people collecting government benefits, a flat median household income (adjusted for inflation), and rewards and freebies for those who do little or nothing while productive and high-achieving people are punished with higher taxes. While campaigning, he openly stated that he favored income redistribution even if it hurt economic growth. He can consider that the one campaign promise kept.
ReplyDeleteWe talk about the size of the national debt that Obama has grown with no consideration how it will be paid. If you factor in all the unfunded future costs of Medicare and Social Security, the federal government really owes about $127 trillion – not the published $17 trillion. That computes to about $1.1 million per tax return filed. So every married couple or single person filing a tax return owes $1.1 million. Since such a sum could never actually be paid, some future president and Congress are going to have to break some of those promises. But Obama won’t to blame will he?
President Bush debt would cost the American tax payers (in today’s dollars) $55,000 per person.
Obama’s call to raise the minimum wage was not presented for the minimum wage earner but was an appeasement to his Labor Union cronies.
Cronyism is the act of appointment of friends and associates to positions of authority, without proper regard to their qualifications is alive and thriving in the Obama Administration. A policy he brought from Chicago with him.
Each day I receive a lot of e-mails from various republican candidates, organizations, super PAC seeking donations. But absolutely NONE of them are taking about what action their candidates
ReplyDelete/candidates will be taking, what programs they support, etc.
The GOP seems to think that to be AGAINST Obama makes them for something. Nancy Pelosi sold us a bill of goods with Obamacare when she said ..."We have to pass this bill first to see what's in it." Enough of "we" did and now we see what's there - disastrous for to our health care delivery system.
What a massive job it is to reinvent the Congress that we have right now. There are few men of principal within the ranks of Congress and that makes the job of Obama so easy - a walk in the park.
Barack Obama’s address to the U.N. General Assembly was so insubstantial, so full of airy platitudes, and so adulterated with the gaseous clichés of bankrupt internationalism and progressive bromides. His speech simply reinforced the truth that he is speaker (not always the truth) not a leader. He is a man of words (other people’s words re-spoken). He is all show and no tell. He’s a follower, not a leader. He cannot think on his feet, and he cannot read a teleprompter very accurately.
ReplyDeleteThe politician that is a Socialist but attempts to act like a middle of the roader in the worse kind of politician. And that is what we have in Obama an actor of sorts. A salesman that wants to sell the steak, but doesn’t know anything about the sizzle he should be selling – that’s what people buy SIZZLE!
Obama never solves a problem! His problems become unimportant and insignificant because they are replaced by an endless stream of new problems – some real, some fabricated, but all intended to remove real problems from center stage.
ReplyDeleteObama seems to be unable to wrap his arms around any problem, reach a consensus on a solution, and fix the problem. This quirk of his is due to the fact that he doesn’t understand the problems and therefore he can’t create a solution. An example: my car will not start. If I don’t understand why (the problem) so I can’t come up with a solution to get my car to start!
So we have put a non-problem solver into the ultimate problem solving job … with expectations of successful results?
The definition of INSANITY – doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.
Obama has failed the American people in nearly every way possible from Foreign Affairs to Border security, from Military strength to Military involvements, from education advancements to social compatibility, from Infrastructure to exploring the heavens via NASA, from honesty in his dealings to the honesty & capability of his appointees with the American people, from his carry out his oath of office to his inner circle staff professionalism.
ReplyDeleteBut the greatest defeat that the American public has suffered under the Obama Administration is in family security – jobs, financial security, their homes, continuity of life from month to month, faith in the leadership put forth by Washington DC. The level of daily uncertainty as to what disaster will be forth coming tomorrow. Plans made years ago have all but disappeared under the leadership of Obama.
Obama has in 6 short years destroyed the faith that the American public had in its government to be there when its leadership was needed. Obama has reduced the stalwart lifelong faith of America into a day to day cycle.
Americans don’t look down the road to retirement; instead they look only as far as next month’s bills being paid on time. The family doesn’t plan for the marriage of their children and birth of grandchildren, but instead what will life be like next month or year at best.
Disappear has evaporated hope and disbelief has led to total distrust of their once great imagination.
