FINALLY Obama Is on the Side of the Angels

At a decisive moment in the battle between Sherlock Holmes and his evil nemesis Moriarty, Moriarty turns to Holmes and says, "Oh, you are ordinary, you are on the side of the angels." Holmes responds, "I may be on the side of the angels but don't think for one second that I am one of them." A classic battle between Good and Evil. God and Satan. Beelzebub and Jesus. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vadar. Harry Potter and Voldemort. And we have seen in the past 24 hours that Barack Obama, and America with him, has come down on the side of the angels - the Syrian rebels - even though there may be no real angels on either side of this bitter civil war. What is President Obama's reasoning? Perhaps it is in part the following : (1). US-supplied weapons could fall into the hands of al-Qaida-linked militants fighting alongside the rebels, but this may be a small price to pay for saving millions of Syrians from slaughter and flight into refugee camps. (2). Obama's decision may have more to do with saving what's left of American credibility in the region and the world after Obama's ill-thought out "red line" statement than it has to do with saving Syria from total destruction. And saving US credibility on the red line by supplying weapons to the rebels, with its concurrent possibility of being drawn into yet another Middle East war, nevertheless fits into the humanitarian goal of saving Syrian women and children from death and torture, something Barack Obama seems to respond to if one considers his reasoning for gun control as a means of saving "beautiful little" children's lives. (3). America's conclusive evidence that al-Assad used chemical weapons against rebel fighters matches the conclusions of France and Britain, but some experts say the rebels may have used some type of chemical weapon, too, so there are no angels in this argument, but being involved on the side of the less-suspect rebels puts the US in a position to better control what happens to al-Assad's chemical weapon stockpile if his regime crumbles, and it gives support to Israel's urgent need to keep chemical weapons out of the hands of Hezbollah. (4). Obama's team could give the rebels a range of weapons, including small arms, assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and other anti-tank missiles, but rebel commanders say they need anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles to counter the regime's superior firepower, delivered from warplanes and armored vehicles. American concern about high-powered weapons ending up in the hands of terrorist groups makes it very unlikely the US will provide sophisticated arms that would require large-scale training but supplying weapons to the rebels makes it likely that American military will have some control over what weaponry actually passes to jihadist groups in the rebel ranks. ~~~~~ So, dear readers, there may be no real angels in the Syrian civil war - but the balance, if one thinks in terms of good and evil, is on the side of the rebels. And that is where Barack Obama has chosen to be. FINALLY.

  1. When I was growing up life was somewhat simple. there was good and bad. The good guys wore white hats and the bad guys wore black hats.

Today however there are no hats to tell the good and bad apart. Case in point Syria. There is obviously lots of bad and the good seem to getting killed off a a pace that when compared to US losses in Viet Nam would give them (at the end of 10 years) 1 million dead. 1 MILLION.

The good we all want to think are the "REBELS" ... but are they. Some of the many rebel forces are being funded by Hezbollah who is also supporting Al-Assad. In fact except for about 10% of the Rebels who are going it alone or with miniscule help from the outside world ... the other 90% of these "FREEDOM FIGHTER" are beholding to various other terrorists organization who are covering their bets on Assad winning by helping his enemies.

So what if Assad wins. well we know that out come ... GENOCIDE for hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians.

What if the "Rebels" win. Well we really know that also. The terrorists (by whichever name they go by) will win, control Syria just like Egypt, Iran, etc. - another thriving JIHAD THEOCRACY in the Middle East region.

We, democracy, human rights, freedom, freedom of choice, stability, freedom of religion (certainly not), can not win in Syria. THERE ARE NO WHITE HATS WITH A DOG IN THIS FIGHT, folks.

Bottom line is maybe the Rebels want sophisticated weaponry to trade to the terrorists when the rebellion is over for p[art of the power structure.

If the Western world wants to help in Syria how about a giant "secured" air lift to get the women and children out to someplace they can live in peace.

It's as my older sister told me once... she said I was born 400 years too late, that the age of chivalry and saving damsels in distress were long gone. She knows there not. For if they are - what's the point

  2. When this Civil War in Syria is over and done with (and it will be sometime - all wars start, have a very disastrous middle section, and end)my gut reaction is that the rebels won't win. but if they do by some quirk of circumstance ... nothing in Syria will have changed for the good. names of leadership will be different. Many good intentions of post war aide and rebuilding will be offered and accepted. But when the country is put all back together again it will look like Syria did some 3 years ago and maybe in the Human Rights and Personal Freedom area worse as 1776Forever said.

The West has failed to rush into some 6 deadly civil wars going on in Africa today and for the last 10 years with NOTHING being decided. Africans killing Africans, women being raped and vilified, children being killed and kidnapped and sold into slavery, villages of men being butchered. And the wars goes on.

Civil Wars have a way of solving NOTHING in 3rd world countries for the most part.

As Casey Pops pointed out God & evil, right & wrong. Luke Skywalker & Darth Vadar, David & Goliath ... good all most always comes down on the right side of the two choices.

Is that what Obama did? Did he finally make the right choice. or with all his problems did he just choose the underdog and hope!

There are angels i just not sure if any are hanging around Obama. his decision to DO SOMETHING in Syria almost has to be based on some reason we have yet to know.

Out of kindness or responsibility is out of the question.
